This 1933 Art Deco building in lush Volunteer Park is SAM’s original home and the location of our extensive Asian art collection, making it one of the most beloved treasures in our creative, cultured, and curious city.

Seattle Art Museum acknowledges we are on the traditional homelands of the Duwamish, and the customary territories of the Suquamish and Muckleshoot Peoples. As a cultural and educational institution, we honor our ongoing connection to these communities past, present and future. We also acknowledge the many urban Native Peoples from many Nations who call Seattle their home.

Current Permanent Exhibits:

The 12 artists in Be/longing were born in different parts of Asia: Azerbaijan, Iran, India, Thailand, China, Korea, and Japan. They have all spent time or moved outside of Asia. Their experiences as both insiders and outsiders have compelled them to explore their Asian heritage from multiple perspectives. Their works, as a result, are at once Asian and global.

After a transformative renovation, the Seattle Asian Art Museum—one of only a few Asian art museums in the United States—reopens with a presentation that embraces this complexity. You will not find galleries labeled by geography. Instead, works from different cultures and from ancient to contemporary times come together to tell stories about Asia in a non-linear narrative.

A native of Seattle and currently based in New York, Kenzan Tsutakawa-Chinn is an LED light installation artist who has also practiced fiber art (indigo dye in particular). Tsutakawa-Chinn’s artistic expertise and experience, as well as his intimate knowledge of SAM’s Asian Art Museum building and Volunteer Park, guided him as he conceived this installation here in the Garden Court.
