Sad-happy, joyful-tragic, hopeful and inspirational music of oppressed people across history. The concert begins with Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms which paints various stories of the human experience—celebration in the midst of threat, promise of peace in the midst of war, and the affirmation of a life of faith. The second half of the program features songs of African American traditions. Well-known spirituals are paired alongside Gospel melodies, newly arranged for the Symphony Tacoma Voices by chorus member Evin Lambert. Tacoma native Stephanie Anne Johnson, a Top 20 Finalist on NBC’s The Voice, will sing from the more contemporary tradition, as well as her own music.
