  • Website Are You WOKE

A series of dance and non-dance events intended to push against assumptions around race, equity, gender, and justice, while creating an environment for examining the presumptions around being “woke.”

Events Include:

SHOT - April 10-13. Through visceral and urgent contemporary dance theater, you are invited to contemplate the alarming and continous murder or black people by American law enforcement.

WAKE UP! With Natasha Marin and David Domke - April 15. A series of conversations with leading local and national activists, to explore what wokeness is.

Dance, Dance, Dance #2 - April 18-20. Works include Crises † by Merce Cunningham, World Premiere of NEW Byrd, and N O R A E F A (2017)* by Vincent Michael Lopez.

WAKE UP! With Frank Leon Roberts - April 22. A series of conversations with leading local and national activists, to explore what wokeness is.

Strange Fruit - April 25-28. Based on a poem and song by Billie Holiday which uses an extended metaphor linking a tree's fruit with lynching victims, Strange Fruit tracks Donald Byrd's feelings as a response to lynching and plays out as a series of dance/theater vignettes.
