Women in the Shadows
Tuesday, March 16, 2027, 4:00–6:00pm
Women in the Shadows explores the inner worlds of women artists overshadowed by history. The featured work, Camille Claudel: Into the Fire, is a theatrical song cycle by Jake Heggie that traces the life of the brilliant French sculptor. Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer give Claudel passionate new voice, casting her not merely as Auguste Rodin’s muse but as a formidable artist in her own right. Mezzo-soprano Nikola Printz, who brings an intense musical and dramatic presence to the role, has been praised in the San Francisco Chronicle for performances that are “heartrending, musically resplendent . . . and thrillingly fierce.” San Francisco Classical Voice has applauded Printz’s “richly colored and flexible voice, complemented by a powerfully expressive physicality.” (San Francisco Classical Voice). Plus works by Florence Price, Vítězslava Kaprálová, Rebecca Clarke and Lili Boulanger.
