The New Guard Sees Seattle Rep's "Eureka Day"
Reflections from our October Arts Outing
On Saturday, October 17th members of the New Guard went on their first Arts Outing of the 2026-27 year to see Eureka Day at Seattle Repertory Theatre.
About the show: At Berkeley’s most proudly progressive private school, every decision is made by committee—and every committee meeting is an adventure. When a case of mumps surfaces, parents and administrators gather to debate safety policies, equity, and what it truly means to protect one another. As idealism collides with real‑world stakes, their well-intentioned efforts unravel in unexpectedly funny and deeply human ways. Jonathan Spector’s popular Tony Award winner serves up a razor‑sharp satire of well‑meaning chaos and shines a light on the shared responsibility that holds a community together.
Reflections from the New Guard
From Allison:
It was truly such a brilliant, witty, yet oddly necessary play that I felt glad to have witnessed. I totally didn't expect what I saw from the synopsis alone, but it really widened my perspective on why some people are so adamant in their beliefs, even when facts that seem clear to most people contradict them. I also appreciated how they poked fun at the dangers of groupthink, misplaced priorities, and performativeness that can occur in an extremely progressive group like the committee of Eureka Day.
From Carina:
Personally, I loved attending the Eureka Day show at Seattle Rep, and I believe that it set a great precedent for the rest of the year, as I left the venue excited to work with everyone in the cohort, and to work with representatives from our different partners! As I mentioned during the meeting, I had a huge appreciation for the acting because every single character got the chance to perform a wide range of emotions, which contrasts what I typically see in high school plays. Another thing that I really liked about the show was the set! One of my biggest questions was how many people work on creating sets per show. I definitely want to come back to Seattle Rep to see how their sets differ as well. I believe that other teens should see another show from this partner because of how beautiful the venue is, and how accessible it is to view high-quality performances ($5 to view a performance with good actors is such a deal!!!) If teens have the time, traveling to Seattle Rep is definitely worth it, and I feel like after attending Eureka Day I can assure others that Seattle Rep takes the art that they do seriously, which is something that I value in performers.
From Mimi:
If you are considering attending this show, I would point it out that there is no intermission, and it will be over by 9:30, in case you have someone picking you up.
From Ria:
1. The show was AMAZING. Beautiful set, amazing meanings, and so so funny.
2. The description does not due it justice. You will laugh more than you’ve ever laughed in one scene.
3. The venue is beautiful, very easy to navigate and get tickets.
4. It’s has great humor, and even if you don’t understand all of the important points being made, you’ll still have a lot of fun! Plus, Seattle Rep has great sales for teens outside of TeenTix where you can pick your seats for lower prices. (though definitely not as low as TeenTix)
From Michelle:
Eureka Day for me was a good 8/10. I think the plot was a little confusing at the start, but I eventually got the hang of it. I loved the show's humor and especially the segment with the zoom call, but I felt like some parts (like the "secret relationship" and the flashback to the anti-vaxxer's child) felt out of place or left unanswered. The pacing was good and I understand the general commentary it was trying to convey. The venue itself was also very beautiful and a great contrast to the tone of the whole show. Coming from someone who hasn't seen a play in a few years, I would definitely recommend this to a first time play-goer teen for maybe their 2nd show or 3rd show.
From Skylar:
I would recommend this show to other teens because the narrative dealt with a relevant topic (despite all the characters being adults). It was quite funny and I believe many teens would enjoy it as much as I did.
From Maya:
I loved it! Honestly, as a young person I felt very welcome, and it compelled me to want to consider coming back for more shows. I was treated with an equal amount of respect, and my presence seemed to be valued by the people working at Seattle Rep.
Want to see Eureka Day for yourself?
